I love "These Woods" but unfortunatly the domain name is taken. I think we should work within the realm of availible domains.
I really like the word "woods" so I think we should go with that. Make a compound word with something else maybe, that way the name will be a one word name.
I'm still open to the idea of "We Use Words" I just don't like the word "Words" so maybe if we substitute that for something else, then it might turn into something cool.
thesewoods.com is taken, but we could have .net or .org.
How about "Those Woods", then? It won't show up in Robert Frost searches, while still retaining the same sort of semantic feeling?
Also, if you wanted to retain the quasi-rainbow colour scheme and the different fora but wanted a different format, you could use a stylised tree as the front page, with the different branches for different fora - it's a bit of an artistic endeavour, but, hey, pretty (and functional!)
'Those woods' sounds good. I was thinking that was the nice thing about going for something 'woods'y, because it suggests design ideas and even to an extent a colour palette.
A big tree would be lovely as a front page. We could have a tree line in the background perhaps. I think something quite artsy would be lovely but I know nothing about the practicalities of such matters.
I'm all down with "Those Woods"
I'm going to work on those compositions today.
I sort of like "We use words"; but would much prefer "The words we use".
I don't know... Just something about the semantics of it.
I'm not too fond of "These woods" so much though...
What would you think about "elocution"?
It means "A style or manner of speaking, especially in public."
Ohkay, I've thought it over and here's an idea me and skwerl88 (good friend) came up with.
I've used the name 'Breefield' for quite some time, origionaly I called myself 'Catalist' and my website / web design business was to be named 'Breefield' but in light of this situation, I think I'm just going to change my name to 'Dustin' and call the forum Breefield.
I already own the domain, it's also an easy word to remember.
Thoughts?
At first I thought this idea was somewhat vain on my part, to name the forum what I call myself, but if I start calling myself something different, and it was ok with you guys. Then it might be alright...
I've been tinkering with a design as well, what do you think of the feel of this
I think 'Breefield' would be cool as a name, it's a nice enough word. I'm still quite into the 'woods' idea though, would be happy to chuck you some money to get the domain name.
Re: design ideas, my boyfriend did this last night. Obviously its pretty woodsy, but you could use it with 'breefield' too.
I don't know how to upload pictures, but here's a link. Hope it works...

The colours would be up for discussion, we used existing barbelith colours just because it was easy. I think I'd like to change the tree line to black. The treeline and information bit at the top would stay at the top of each page, much as it does on Barbelith. We thought it would be good to keep this feature as it really helps with navigation. Thoughts?
Oh noes! I broke the board!
Perhaps some kind person could tell me how to fix that link. (Edited: thank you!)
Also, looking at it again I think it could do with lots of tinkering. I like your design Breefield because you've got it all on one page, so you don't have to scroll down. This is very neat and we should aim for that. I also prefer the right-aligned text I think.
Yay, I'm glad you like it.
Your boyfreind is pretty talented, that design is really good. I'm still not sure which I'm going to go with though.
So, to switch subjects really quick. Someone keeps registering with a blank email address, and the username '.'
I'm going to need a figure out a fix for this, because right now It's breaking the barbelith.breefield.com/profiles/ page.
Yeah, I think Breefield would be fine as a name. I'd be happy with 'Those Woods', too, and I like that design, with the trees at the top. The other design, with just the text, seems a bit cluttered somehow. Maybe it's just all the italics?
It's nice to see more people signing up - I didn't think it was possible to sign up with a blank email address, though?
Yeah, I'm not quite sure how they're doing that. I have some suspicions though.
I have a superb idea on how to combine the 'woods' feel from Owls's boyfriends composition and the feel I'm aiming for. I'll try and hammer it out later today.
I think I'm going to go with 'Breefield' for now, that seems easiest in my mind.
Owls, that's pretty beautiful.
Breefield is a nice name, in a unique kind of way; if you wanted to tinker with the design occasionally a lá Google's frontpage, you could occasionally have graphics for CloverBreefield, Breefield of Dreams, etc.
Of course, your mileage may vary.
Yeah, I like the trees, I'm excited to see how Breefield/Dustin's reworking it all.
Props to my OH on that one. I wanted trees and he did everything else. Had I had much control over it there probably would have been a wicked gothick castle in the background, some bats, and a bad-ass babe on a motorbike.
Hey, check this out. Let me know what you think.

Looking good Dustin. Glad you managed to fix the ' ' bug. You must have been busy yesterday.
Well not too busy. It's just annoying. I think the person had Javascript turned off because they didn't have an email address in the database either.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to incorporate the woods feeling in, but since I'm going to go with the name 'Breefield'...well yeah.
Personally I think you should drop the subheadings for each fora all together, particularly if you are moving away from the linear stack barbelith had.
I think if it was just the main headings + maybe a link to the most recent thread it would look a lot less cluttered. Perhaps each fora could have a sticky thread at the top, which would provide any introduction required?
I'm not too hung up on the woods, I'm just pleased if we get something functional and attractive, which you seem to be well on the way to putting in place. Well done!
I don't think we need the summary of the thread contents under the forum headings. Always seemed a bit redundant to me, and it does clutter it up some.
Yeah, I agree - I don't think we need the little forum summaries, especially if we choose fairly descriptive names for each one. As Bob said, a description on the first page of each forum might be better.
That said, it does look very nice - well done.
Shouldn't the name of the new forum mean something? The appeal of Barbelith, apart from the attitude, the sophistication of the discussion etc., was the name, or what the name meant to me.
Not sure if my input counts for anything of course; I wasn't able to get an invite to the old board.
On which note shall I start an introductions thread in Conversation? Are you going to be transferring activity on here to the new board format?
We could also do with a time-zone option.
I'm posting this at 14.33 (BST) btw.
Hi Machine. I'd say go for it (the introductions thread) get this space a bit more lived-in.
This will all be transfered over later. Don't worry about that.
What about the name? Have you got your heart set on Breefield now, or can we leave it open for the time being?
I'd say it's all open to suggestion still, I can still buy a new domain. I'm just developing the new design right now, and trying to work with my annoying client. I have a "solid" design concept for the new board at this point. What we're going to call it could still change.
I'd like to maybe see it as Antilith.
Have a look at Barbelith in its current state and it's basically become a non-functional, self indulgant feifdom of one person's opionion clapped on by hir's fanclub. The acceptable range of discussion has become so narrow that no meaningful discussion actually exists anymore. Anyone falling outside of this narrow band is ridiculed and inevitibly acused of one or another -ism. Particularly if you happen to disagree with any opinions of the Moderator's group who seem to believe that verbiage is might, and might makes right. The only things left to be discussed there are bannings, moderation requests and where everyone will go once the whole thing is dead.
As if it isn't already.
I strongly believe that the look of this site should be re-formatted. Lets move as far away as possible from what is over there. This is my first post here, I need to sniff around and see how things work but, at this stage, just about any alternative is a good one.
And what other questions might be raised as conducive to smooth proceedings "Aboveground"?
(could we just call it "Overground"? I realise I'm a little late in coming to this (so far fairly mellow) party, of course...)
What roles must we avoid falling into?
What delights might we indulge in with a refreshed and enlightened conscience?
